Looking for a reputable divorce lawyer? www.martindale.com
You can consult Martindale Hubbell, which offers a national directory of qualified divorce lawyers, by accessing them at: www.martindale.com. Then, simply type in the state and city you need and select an attorney from the list.
www.aaml.org
An even more selective list can be found through the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. Every member of the AAML must meet stringent membership requirements that include extensive experience and an ethics evaluation. Access their list online, or through your library.
Be sure you select a Family Law specialist. In these days of sophisticated, complicated laws, you really do need an expert. It is also a good sign if they are, for instance, head of the Family Law section of a Bar Association.
For a complete list of questions to ask when interviewing a lawyer, please see Chapter 6 in The Divorce Planner.
I recommend interviewing at least three, because whom you choose can make a big difference in your settlement outcome.
Don't forget to ask: What is your hourly rate?
What is your retainer? Do you handle custody battles? (Not all lawyers do!)
FOR LAWYERS
The Divorce Planner will organize female clients and lighten the load of family practice attorneys who often face women emotionally leveled by the prospect of divorce.
How often have you met with a client, explained the process and requested the information you need to begin, only to have her call an hour, or a day later, unable to remember exactly what you asked for, or when you need it? The Divorce Planner will eliminate this, and many other unnecessary calls, including those asking when the next meeting was scheduled.
When attorneys provide a copy of The Divorce Planner to clients, they are giving these women a tool to enhance the flow of information among attorney, accountant, and therapist, as well as a wealth of support information not necessarily provided by an attorney, but essential nonetheless.
